ASSEMBLY
Assembly was the conclusion to Orbit, in which myself and the two artists Amapola Prada and Elizabeth Sonnenburg, lived enclosed in a biosphere set in between the narrow windowpanes of the Whitney Museum’s theater for 10 consecutive days. Assembly marked our exit from the biosphere set and was never rehearsed. As the director, I arranged cue points between the performers, lighting, and sound designer before our exit, communicated over walkie talkies across the glass window. Assembly mixed a performance of a press conference such as those conducted with astronauts returning from space journeys, and expressions of -what in Orbit we called- “red energy exercises”. Red was emblematic of the root chakra (Muladhadra in Kundalini), associated to sex, excrement, secrets, and roots. We did these exercises to expel and transform colonizing behavior existing within us, and to generally expel the colonizing intentions of space industrialists at that time.
