Performance
“Directing Light onto Fist of Father“ at Leo Koenig Gallery opened with Initiation. In this performance, I stood with my eyes closed next to a glass shelf in the installation holding the plaster caste of my father’s fist for 2 hours. The Act involved me visiting the gallery on any sunny day, standing outside with a mirror, and directing sunlight into the gallery onto the plaster caste placed on a glass shelf. At the back of the gallery, a 16mm film loop was directed into a mirror bouncing the image of sunlight tracing the contours of the same plaster fist across the wall. Next to this mirror, yellow Turmeric was piled on a glass shelf with an empty chair across from a yellow painting at the entrance.
My most personal work to date, I created this at a time when NYC was in protests and Occupy Wall Street was assembled in Zuccotti Park. A time pre-smartphone (audiences were not taking pictures much), and a time when I used performance to express my political concerns more directly.
