Faultline
Faultline considered the vulnerability of California’s geographical fault lines, susceptible to earthquakes, as a metaphor for current political and social fissures. Two 18ft sculptures of separate halves of sunglasses were installed on the balcony of the Hammer Museum, and the other in the gallery in a “fallen” position. The disparate positions of the two halves pointed to separate perceptions as apart of the same “frame”. In the center of the gallery, visitors were invited to sit in chairs on either side of an exhibition wall and interact with one another through cavities cut out of the wall reinforced by green wooden frames. A scraggly red line made of resin illustrative of a fault line was installed on the floor and ran in and out of the gallery.
